It's time to get out and enjoy the outdoors. It’s also time to get some exercise or to cross train for a favorite activity. Way back in the day there was rollerblading and that was really fun and a great low-impact exercise program. Well, it’s not just back but it is hot and getting hotter with a number of manufacturers producing lighter, faster, and easier to use products. With some pretty impressive endorsements, the activity of inline skating is emerging as a strong family activity too.

Rollerblading vs. Inline

Inline skating is an activity that includes a number of products from various manufacturers. Rollerblade is one such manufacturer. But because the Rollerblade company so dominated in the early days of the sport, their name has become a near generic name for the entire field. So when you are rollerblading, you are inline skating. But if you are inline skating you might be using one of their products or not. Think of it like facial tissue. You may or may not use a Kleenex brand product but the term kleenex is nearly a generic name for the category.

Rollerblades vs. Roller Skates

For little kids, having two sets of two wheels means it's easier to get their balance and therefore become confident on wheels. Also, if you are spending most of your time on wheels in the roller rink, then roller skates will make sense as they can execute tight turns easier. But for most older kids, teens, and adults, particularly when used outside, inline skates will make more sense. They dodge bumps, cracks, and debris easier. It is easier to go faster too.

Is Inline Skating a Good Workout?

Yes it is. Why?

  • It burns calories faster than many other activities.

  • It is a low impact activity particularly as compared to running.

  • By strengthening the lower body and core muscles it will build muscle mass in those areas.

  • The cardio benefits are readily apparent as the heart rate is elevated during inline workouts.

  • The refreshing nature of covering plenty of distance without having to haul large gear like bicycles is great for mental health.

Who Makes the Best Inline Skates?

There are several well thought of manufacturers in this sport.

  • Rollerblade continues to have a large presence in the field making several different models being widely used all over the world.

  • K2 is best known for its skiing products but it makes several interesting inline models that keys off of its innovations in ski boots.

  • Roller Derby is best known for its highly entertaining competitions on rollerskates. However, by branching out into inline skates, it is becoming a force to be reckoned with.

  • Bauer and a few other ice skate companies are now producing quality inline skates aimed at its hockey customers looking for off season workout equipment.

5 Things You Need to Get Started

  1. High quality skates that fit well. For about the price of a good pair of shoes, you can have a highly dependable set that will support your efforts. There are good choices for both adults and kids.

  2. A helmet is a total necessity. One made for inline skating will protect you well. Helmets made for this activity will extend a bit further down the back of your head than other helmets. Be sure to find one to fit the age of the participant.

  3. Protective pads for your knees, wrists, and elbows will help you become more confident more quickly. There are sizes made for both kids and adults.

  4. A flat, open paved space. At first, you will need the space provided by an unused parking lot or an empty tennis court to get your balance and to learn starting, stopping and turning.

  5. The energy to try something new. With a bit of practice and maybe a helping hand from a friend, you can be up and moving on inline skates sooner than you think!
