Overgrips

Over cooked, over done, and over served are all considered too much of a good thing. But tennis overgrips aren't bad at all. In fact, they can be very good things indeed.

These can make a huge difference in the performance of tennis players. For a very small price, grips can make a gigantic difference in a tennis racquet handle and that, in turn, can make for instant improvement in one's game.

What is a Tennis Overgrip?

Simply put, an overgrip looks like a regular grip but actually it is designed to go on top of an already installed grip. Therefore, depending on how it is installed, it should increase the diameter of the racquet even though typically it will be quite thin.

Why Buy an Overgrip?

There are four reasons to shop for an overgrip.

Increase Grip Size

If you've checked out our Guide to Measuring Grip Size, you know that this is a very important point to consider in buying a tennis racquet. But sometimes your hand is in between sizes.

Buy a Smaller Size

To get the most from your gear you should search for the right size but if you can't find one, the right size to buy is the smaller size and build it up with an overgrip.

Prevent Slipping

As one of those sports where perspiration is standard whether played in a hot, humid climate or a dry one, if racquets are sliding around then the outcome is not going to be great. The best overgrips generally create tackiness

A tacky grip also means you won't have to grab it quite as tightly. But the best tacky overgrips won't be too sticky allowing the player to shift their grip if needed.

Sweat Absorption and Comfort

It is just flat out uncomfortable if your hand has a wet feel during a match. Overgrips being soft and absorbent, not only prevent slipping but they make tennis racquets feel better in the hand.

Moisture is not your friend - dry is. Quality grips can reduce blisters too.

Reduce Vibrations

Tennis overgrips can be an important part of combatting elbow and arm issues as they can help soak up those hurtful vibes. To address arm issues, accessories like grips from a strong brand can help.

Need Arm-Friendly?

Much of racquet technology is aimed at finding the best materials that are vibration absorbent. Many brands pride themselves on being arm-friendly.

Overgrips vs. Replacement Grips

A replacement grip goes directly over the handle of the tennis racquet. The point of an overgrip is to go on top of the grip itself.

Who Makes the Best Tennis Overgrips?

Several brands are noted for having outstanding reviews as you shop for grips. Among the major brands, Gamma Supreme, Wilson Pro, Head, Yonex Super Grap and Babolat are very well represented in reviews.

Price of Overgrips?

While not free, with a price under $10.00 even for quality brands like Head, Babolat, Gamma and Wilson, you can afford to pack several of these in your tennis bag. On the pro tour, they will often replace grips right there on the court during a change of side.

Durability?

As durability is not a strength of overgrips regardless of brand, you should pack several. The point is, to secure a dry, comfortable grip, change overgrips often.

Do Colors Matter?

No. Go ahead and get colors like blue, pink, yellow or orange if you want! Some like to match their orange, yellow, blue or even pink color schemes on their racquets.
