The Tennis and Golf Company Story

The Story
It all started because David forgot his socks prior to an after work tennis match.  The year was 1976, and there were no specialty tennis stores in metro Detroit where he could quickly pick up a pair of socks or have his racquet restrung.  Believing that avid tennis players deserved better, he found an old 750 sq. ft. house in Southfield, and in May of 1977, opened The Tennis Company.  His main goal was to sell things cheaper to the true tennis player.
The Tennis Company volleyed successfully for 15 years, thanks to the service points David scored along the way.  Having the best selection and providing even better service was not enough to score big with his customers, so David added the Tennis Club Membership, a demo court to test racquets, and one-hour stringing six days a week.  His fifth store move also gave him 8,500 sq. ft. to expand the store’s merchandise selection to include apparel and shoes for golfers, runners, walkers and fans of aerobic exercise.  Success continued to follow David, and 1999 found him at the top of his game, with a move to a 6th location, and a name change to The Tennis & Golf Company.  The store had positioned itself as the largest and best tennis store in the Midwest, and customers came from around the world.
Not one to rest on his laurels, David continued to keep trying new ideas, while still stressing to his employees the importance of making every customer feel important. Not a day went by without him greeting someone for the first time with a big “Helloooooo”, or telling a disgruntled customer “No Problem”, then offering them some cookies that he had just baked in the oven.  The excitement of a new face to the game of tennis was hard for David to contain, and his generosity of freebies resulted in them being a loyal customer forever.
Over the past 40 plus years, David’s passion for promoting and supporting the game of tennis did not go unnoticed, as he received numerous awards and accolades from both local, state and national tennis organizations.  He will also be remembered for his participation in the Bike MS rides and as a member of Team Alex for the Make a Wish foundation.  David’s legacy will carry on at The Tennis & Golf Company  with new owners who will continue to provide great service, prices and selection in store, while also adding an online shopping experience.
