Fall Tennis Essentials

9/15/2022 - Sarah M. - Racquets & Paddles

It's hard to believe Spooky Season 2022 is right around the corner, but before we know it, the leaves will begin to change, and the temperatures will drop. While tennis is a year-round sport that every age and skill level can enjoy, playing tennis in the fall requires different gear than in other seasons. Of course, you'll need some obvious equipment like a tennis racquet, tennis balls, and a bag, but what about the season-specific items?

From the essentials to worthy splurge items, below is everything you need to play tennis this fall.

1. Tennis Sneakers

How long do tennis sneakers last? Well, it depends on how much you play. You may not see visible signs of wear & tear, but that doesn't mean you should be playing with the same shoes for years on end.

The average shoe lasts about 350-500 miles, but this can be hard to calculate when you're on the court. The general rule of thumb is about 40-60 hours before the sneaker's midsole is worn out. For example, if you play tennis once a week for an hour, you'd need to replace your tennis sneakers at least once a year. Most tennis players need new tennis shoes every 6 to 10 months, depending on how much they play. The same goes for kids, by the way. Consider investing in a new youth pair for the fall tennis season if you have little ones.

2. Clothes For Layering

Autumn is all about dressing in layers. Sunny weather can quickly turn into a crisp, chilly fall day instantly. Don't be stuck without the proper clothes on the court. Look for lightweight sweatshirts and pullovers that you can easily throw on and off without wasting time. At the same time, avoid heavy or bulky sweatshirts that can restrict your movement.

Tip: Full and half-zip sweatshirts work well because they're quick and easy to put on and take off. Invest in a few high-quality pieces that you can use all season long.

We love the NikeCourt Dri-FIT Victory pullover for Men and Women. These half-zips are made with breathable Nike Dri-FIT technology to keep you dry and comfortable during a match. They can also be folded to easily fit in your tennis bag when you're not using it.

3. Sunglasses

A good pair of sunglasses is one of the most essential pieces of tennis equipment you can buy. You need to see the ball while shielding your eyes from the sun's harmful UV rays. Opt for polarized lenses while you play because they help reduce glare from shining directly into your eyes.

Also, not all sunglasses are suitable for playing sports. For example, tennis sunglasses should fit snugly without impacting your vision. Check out our Sports Sunglasses to find the perfect pair. If sunglasses aren't your thing while you play, consider a cap or visor to keep the sun out of your eyes.

Tip: Don't forget the sunscreen! Even if it's not hot out, you should always apply sunscreen to your face and body before heading out to the tennis courts.

4. Compression Socks

Not all socks are created equal. Compression socks for tennis players are especially useful because they can help prevent common foot issues like plantar fasciitis, foot fatigue, and arch or heel pain.

The best tennis compression socks are the OS1st FS4 Plantar Fasciitis Compression Socks for Women and Men. These tennis socks have targeted compression levels and cushioning to help you stay on the court longer without aching feet. Also, don't worry about the extra bulk. These socks are thin, so you won't feel like you're bulging out of your new tennis shoes.

5. Tennis Books

While this may not be an essential item on the list, plenty of compelling tennis books make for a great read if you're an avid tennis player. Plus, there's nothing like sitting down with a good book and a Pumpkin Spice Latte to ring in the fall season.

Some of the most famous tennis books include The Inner Game of Tennis by Timothy Galwey, The Pros: The Forgotten Era of Tennis by Peter Underwood, and Open: An Autobiography by Andre Agassi.

Once you check off the items on the list, you only need a tennis court with a regulation net. You don't have to be a country club member to play tennis. Many local parks have tennis courts where you can play for free.
