Playing Tennis in the Fall

09/07/2022 - Sarah M. - Racquets & Paddles

Tennis is usually associated with spring and summer, but that doesn’t mean you should put away your gear now that fall has arrived. Tennis courts in autumn feature picturesque foliage and the fresh scents of fall.

Whether you’re a once-a-week kind of player or you spend all your free time on the court, fall is one of the best seasons to play tennis. Here are eight reasons you shouldn’t hang up your tennis racquet now that the warmer season is over.

1. Better Weather

It’s not too hot to play tennis outside anymore. Fall weather is perfect. It’s not too hot but not too cold, making it ideal for pleasant outdoor tennis lessons. You also don’t have to avoid the peak heat hours as long as you bring a hat or visor and a water bottle. We love the EcoVessel Stainless Steel Straw Water Bottle to keep water cold throughout matches and practices.

2. Fitness Motivation

Fall is the season for caramel apples, candy corn, pumpkin spice, and other festive foods. With all the delicious treats available, play tennis to help keep your fitness routine in check this sweet season.

Staying active in the cooler weather can be tricky. One of the easiest ways to stay motivated is to find an activity you enjoy. If you like playing tennis in the spring, you’ll love playing in the fall!

3. Stay Outdoors

Skip the stuffy gym. Tennis is one activity that allows you to enjoy some fall foliage and fresh air. Depending on where you live, many avid tennis players enjoy a game outside until well into November.

Tip: Don’t let fickle fall weather ruin your game. Throw a layering pullover in your tennis bag if the temperatures quickly drop while you’re in the middle of a match.

4. Best Time to Buy New Gear

Companies often release new collections in the fall in the hopes of sales spiking during the holiday season. So if you’re on the hunt for the newest and latest racquets and tennis shoes, fall is the time to buy them.

What’s even better? Summer sales are on! Summer collections are up for grabs as stores make room for new inventory.

Shop our huge Summer Sale for up to 70% off summer apparel.

5. Less Busy

Even though playing tennis in the fall can be just as fun as playing in the spring, many players call it quits once the leaves begin to change. That means public tennis courts will be less busy, so you can get in more uninterrupted practice time.

You don’t have to pay to be a member of a tennis club to enjoy the game. Many cities and towns across the country have free tennis courts for everyone to enjoy.

6. Kids After School Activity

Tennis can be fun for all ages and fitness levels. Do your little ones need a new after-school extracurricular for the 2022-2023 school year? Consider tennis lessons to help keep your kids on their feet while they learn new skills and make new friends. Start building up your kid’s confidence on the court with a youth tennis racquet for extra practice.

7. Boost Mental Health

For many of us, the colder weather comes with the winter blues. Something about the sun setting before 5 pm puts a damper on the rest of the day. Tennis is a great way to get your body moving and your heart pumping. No matter your age group, tennis can boost mental health by releasing endorphins and serotonin (the happy hormones) throughout the year.

Playing tennis also forces you to focus on hitting the ball and beating your opponent, which can help take your mind off other stressors like work or school.

8. Learn How to Play Tennis in Cold Weather

Fall is the perfect introduction to playing tennis when it’s cold outside if you want to play tennis year-round. However, keep in mind playing tennis in the cold is different than playing when it’s hot outside. For example, did you know the ball will bounce differently if it’s cold, and you should change your warmup routine if you’re playing tennis in the winter?

Consider investing in cold weather running gear to keep you warm on the court, no matter the temperature outside.
