16x19 vs. 18x20 String Pattern: Spin, Control and Feel
Quick answer: A 16x19 racquet has 16 main (vertical) strings and 19 cross strings; an 18x20 has 18 mains and 20 crosses. The open 16x19 pattern gives more spin, more power and a higher launch, and it is the most common choice. The dense 18x20 pattern gives more control, a lower, flatter ball flight and longer string life, and suits advanced players with fast, full swings.
Many popular racquets are sold in both patterns, so this is often the last decision you make before buying. Here’s what the numbers mean and how they change the way the ball comes off your strings.
What does 16x19 mean on a tennis racquet?
The first number is the number of main strings, which run from the top of the head to the throat. The second is the number of cross strings, which run side to side. With the same head size, fewer strings means wider gaps between them (an “open” pattern), and more strings means smaller gaps (a “dense” or “closed” pattern).
What is the difference between 16x19 and 18x20?
| 16x19 (open) | 18x20 (dense) | |
|---|---|---|
| Spin | More: main strings move and snap back more easily | Less, though fast swings still generate plenty |
| Power and depth | More; the string bed is livelier | Less; you supply more of the pace |
| Launch angle | Higher | Lower, flatter |
| Control | Good | More precise, especially on big swings |
| Feel | Softer, more forgiving | Firmer, more connected |
| String life | Shorter, especially with spin strokes | Longer |
| Sweet spot | Feels larger | Feels smaller |
| Typical player | Beginners to advanced; most players | Advanced players with long, fast swings |
General characteristics. Head size, stiffness, string type and tension also affect spin, power and string life.
Does 16x19 give more spin than 18x20?
Generally, yes. With fewer strings and wider gaps, the main strings slide sideways when you brush up the back of the ball, then snap back, adding rotation. The open pattern also lets the ball sink a little deeper into the string bed, which helps the strings grip it. An 18x20 can still produce heavy topspin for players with fast racquet-head speed, but it takes more effort.
Why do some players prefer 18x20?
Control and predictability. The dense pattern deflects less and launches the ball lower, so players who already hit with a lot of pace can swing harder without the ball sailing long. Strings also move less, so they wear more slowly, which helps if you break strings often. Some players simply like the firmer, more connected feel on flat shots and volleys.
Which racquets come in both patterns?
Several control frames are sold both ways, so you can choose the pattern without changing the frame: the Wilson Blade 98 16x19 and Blade 98 18x20, and the Babolat Pure Strike 98 16x19 and Pure Strike 98 18x20. Head splits the choice across models: the Speed MP is 16x19 and the Speed Pro is 18x20. Some racquets use in-between patterns, such as the 16x20 on the Babolat Pure Aero 98.
Who should choose which?
- Choose 16x19 if you are a beginner or intermediate, want easy spin and depth, play with moderate swing speed, or want a more forgiving, comfortable string bed.
- Choose 18x20 if you are an advanced player with long, fast swings, your shots tend to fly long, you hit fairly flat, or you break strings too often in a 16x19.
- Not sure? Start with 16x19. It suits more players, and you can always try a dense pattern later through our demo program.
Frequently asked questions
Is 16x19 or 18x20 better for beginners?
16x19. The open pattern is more forgiving, adds power and spin, and makes it easier to hit the ball deep. Most beginner and intermediate racquets use 16x19 or a similar open pattern.
Do strings break faster in a 16x19 pattern?
Usually, yes. The main strings move more against the crosses, which wears notches into them, especially with spin strokes and polyester strings. If you break strings often, a denser pattern, a thicker gauge or a more durable string can help.
Should I string an 18x20 at a lower tension?
Many players string a dense pattern a few pounds lower to restore some power and comfort, because the 18x20 string bed already plays firmer. Start inside the frame’s recommended range and adjust by feel. Our tension guide explains how.
Does string pattern affect comfort?
It can. A dense 18x20 string bed feels firmer, while an open 16x19 usually feels softer and more forgiving. String type and tension have a bigger effect on comfort than pattern alone.
What does 16x20 mean?
It means 16 main strings and 20 cross strings. It sits between 16x19 and 18x20, adding a little control and string life while keeping most of the spin of an open pattern. The Babolat Pure Aero 98 uses 16x20.
