Pickleball Court Dimensions

The 5th Dimension was a pop vocal group with many hits in the 1960's and 70's. A pickleball court dimensions may not produce any Top 40 musical hits, but there sure are plenty of hits taking place on courts for this increasingly popular sport.

Pickleball Court Diagram

A pickleball court can be constructed anywhere, but even though it is much smaller than a tennis court and equal to a doubles badminton court, there are specifications that must be followed. The official court dimensions pickleball uses are set by the USA Pickleball Association.

Overall Dimensions

An official pickleball court size is exactly 20 feet wide and 44 feet long including the width of the lines. This court size of 20 x 44 feet is standard for indoor or outdoor pickleball courts.

The same pickleball court dimensions are used for singles and doubles play. There are no "alleys" as found on tennis or badminton courts.

Perimeter Fencing

Overall playing surface needs to include space outside the lines. USAPA calls for an overall minimum playing surface of 30 feet by 60 feet.

The preferred overall area is 40 feet by 64 feet whether or not fencing (or walls) come into play. Tennis courts also have surface dimensions that allow plenty of space to play on either an outdoor court or indoor court.

The Different Areas

Non Volley Zone

The non volley zone, also known as the kitchen, is an area not seen on a tennis court. Pickleball court dimensions require a non volley line be drawn 7 feet from the net and parallel to it.

The serve may not land in this area and players may not touch it while striking the ball unless the ball bounces first. Pickleball courts without a kitchen are simply not pickleball courts.

Service Courts

The rest of the playing area for pickleball courts that is not the kitchen is divided into two service courts. The service courts are 15 feet long and 10 feet wide. These are official pickleball court measurements.

The center line runs perpendicular to the baseline and the non volley line on a pickleball court. The center line typically does not cross into the non volley zone.

Lines

A ball must land on or inside the lines to be "in". During play, if any part of the ball touches any part of the lines of a pickleball court, it is in just like a tennis court.

Outside Lines

The outside boundaries are called the sidelines. The sidelines run on either side of a pickleball court. All pickleball court lines are supposed to be 2 inches wide and contrast with the color of the playing area.

How High is a Pickleball Net?

Pickleball courts should have a net that is 22 feet wide. A pickleball net height is lower than a tennis net.

A pickleball net should be 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches at the center. The pickleball court net height is standardized and should be the same on every court so that play is not impacted by variations in the space or height.

An existing tennis net can be used on a pickleball court as long as the net height of 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches at the center whether it is an outdoor or indoor court set up is observed.

If the existing net is dragging on the court and it impacts play, a replay can be called. This is something of a judgement call but if a player gets tangled up or the ball lands on the excess net, the call becomes more obvious.

What About Temporary Court Dimensions?

Even if a court is temporary, the dimensions pickleball court for singles and doubles play are the standard specifications from USAPA. 20 x 44 feet with a kitchen of 7 feet are the dimensions.
