Babolat Pure Drive vs. Pure Aero: Which Should You Choose?
Quick answer: On paper the Babolat Pure Drive and Pure Aero are almost twins: both have a 100 sq in head, 300 g unstrung weight, 16x19 string pattern and 23/26/23 mm beam. The difference is the tuning. The Pure Drive is built for easy power and deep, penetrating shots, while the Pure Aero’s aerodynamic frame and spin-focused string pattern are built for fast swings and heavy topspin.
The Pure Drive and Pure Aero are two of the most popular racquets in tennis, and they are easy to confuse. Here’s how the current versions, the Pure Drive Gen11 and the Pure Aero Gen9, compare, and how to choose.

Tennis Warehouse’s lab measured strung test frames at 318 g for both, with a swingweight of 317 for the Pure Drive and 320 for the Pure Aero, and stiffness of 69 and 66. In other words, they swing almost the same; the feel and ball flight are what set them apart.
Which has more power: Pure Drive or Pure Aero?
The Pure Drive. Babolat designs it around power, using an open pattern, diamond-shaped grommets and the Woofer system to return more energy to the ball. It produces a flatter, more penetrating shot that is easy to hit deep, and it is strong on serves. The Pure Aero also has plenty of pace, but more of your swing goes into spin, so the ball tends to travel on a higher, heavier arc.
Which has more spin: Pure Drive or Pure Aero?
The Pure Aero. Its frame is shaped to cut through the air so you can swing faster, and its Spin Grommets at 6 and 12 o’clock let the main strings move and snap back for more rotation. It has been the signature frame of heavy-topspin players for years; Babolat associates the line with Carlos Alcaraz. The Pure Drive is still spin-friendly with its 16x19 pattern, but it rewards flatter, more direct swings.
Which is more comfortable?
Neither is a soft racquet. Babolat lists the Pure Aero slightly lower in stiffness (69 RA) than the Pure Drive (72 RA), and the Pure Drive uses NF²-Tech flax fibers in the frame to help filter vibration. If you have arm discomfort, consider a softer string such as a multifilament, a lower tension, or a more flexible frame like the Wilson Clash; see our Wilson Blade vs. Clash guide.
What other versions are there?
Both lines come in lighter Team (about 285 g) and Lite (about 270 g) versions for players who want an easier swing, and in a 98 sq in version for advanced players who want more control. The Pure Aero 98 uses a denser 16x20 pattern, and the Pure Drive line also includes a larger 107 sq in model. Shop the full Pure Drive and Pure Aero ranges.
Who should choose which?
- Choose the Pure Drive if you hit fairly flat, like to serve big and want free power and depth from the baseline.
- Choose the Pure Aero if you swing fast with a topspin grip, want the ball to dip and kick, and like hitting high-margin rally balls.
- Choose a Team or Lite version if 300 g feels heavy, you are a newer player, or you are moving up from a junior racquet.
- Not sure? Hit both if you can; the difference is easiest to feel on groundstrokes. Our tennis racquet buying guide explains weight, head size and balance.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Pure Aero better than the Pure Drive for beginners?
Neither is a beginner racquet at 300 g. Newer players usually do better with a lighter Team or Lite version of either line. Pick the Drive for easier depth and the Aero if you already swing with topspin.
Do the Pure Drive and Pure Aero weigh the same?
Yes. Babolat lists both at 300 g unstrung with a 290 swingweight, and Tennis Warehouse measured both at 318 g strung. They handle almost identically; the difference is in feel and ball flight.
Which strings does Babolat recommend for each?
Babolat recommends RPM Blast or RPM Power for the Pure Drive Gen11 and RPM Blast or RPM Team for the Pure Aero Gen9, with a 46–55 lb tension range for both. See our string and tension guide.
What racquet does Carlos Alcaraz use?
Alcaraz is a Babolat Pure Aero player. Pros often use customized frames, so a retail racquet may not match a pro’s exact specs.
Should I get the Pure Aero 98 or the Pure Aero 100?
The 100 is easier to use, with more power, spin and forgiveness. The 98 is heavier at 305 g, with a smaller head and denser 16x20 pattern for more control. Choose the 98 only if you have long, fast swings and hit the center consistently.
